چکیده

The revolution of hydraulic fracturing [1] has dramatically increased the supply and lowered the cost of natural gas in the United States driving an expansion of natural gas-fired generation capacity in many electrical grids [2]. Unrelated to the natural gas expansion, lower capital costs [3] and renewable portfolio [4] standards are driving an expansion of intermittent renewable generation capacity such as wind and photovoltaic generation. These two changes may potentially combine to create new threats to the reliability of these interdependent energy infrastructures. Natural gasfired generators are often used to balance the fluctuating output of wind generation. However, the time-varying output of these generators results in time-varying natural gas burn rates that impact the pressure in interstate transmission pipelines. Fluctuating pressure impacts the reliability of natural gas deliveries to those same generators and the safety of pipeline operations. We adopt a partial differential equation model of natural gas pipelines and use this model to explore the effect of intermittent wind generation on the fluctuations of pressure in natural gas pipelines. The mean square pressure fluctuations are found to grow linearly in time with points of maximum deviation occurring at the locations of flow reversals.

Thresholds and Complex Dynamics of Interdependent Cascading Infrastructure Systems

Critical infrastructures have a number of the characteristic properties of complex systems. Among these are infrequent large failures through cascading events. These events, though infrequent, often obey a power law distribution in their probability versus size which suggests that conventional risk analysis does not apply to these systems. Real infrastructure systems typically have an additiona...

A dynamic Bayesian network based framework to evaluate cascading effects in a power grid

In recent years, the growing interest toward complex critical infrastructures and their interdependencies have solicited new efforts in the area of modeling and analysis of large interdependent systems. Cascading effects are a typical phenomenon of dependencies of components inside a system or among systems. The present paper deals with the modeling of cascading effects in a power grid. In part...

The robustness of interdependent clustered networks

It was recently found that cascading failures can cause the abrupt breakdown of a system of interdependent networks. Using the percolation method developed for single clustered networks by Newman [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 058701 (2009)], we develop an analytical method for studying how clustering within the networks of a system of interdependent networks affects the system’s robustness. We find th...

Performance, Robustness, and Cyber Security of Critical Infrastructure Systems – A Cyber-Physical Systems Research Theme

Critical infrastructures are complex physical and cyber-based systems that form the lifeline of modern society, and their reliable and secure operation is of paramount importance to national security and economic vitality. The resilience of interdependent transportation networks under targeted attack

Modern world builds on the resilience of interdependent infrastructures characterized as complex networks. Recently, a framework for analysis of interdependent networks has been developed to explain the mechanism of resilience in interdependent networks. Here we extend this interdependent network model by considering flows in the networks and study the system’s resilience under different attack...
